Bladder Bliss – dealing with pesky urinary tract infections (UTI)

During a UTI, the most important action is to drink plenty of fluids to help flush out the bacteria. Water and herbal teas are excellent choices (especially in mild to moderate cases), as they not only increase fluid intake but also offer medicinal and antibacterial properties that can provide quick relief. Cranberry juice, specifically unsweetened, is also recommended as it may help prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract.

Herbs with a history of traditional use include,

  • Uva Ursi (Bearberry): Known for its antibacterial properties, it has been traditionally used to treat UTIs.
  • Goldenseal: Contains berberine, which has antimicrobial effects that can help combat infection.
  • Echinacea: Commonly used to boost the immune system and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Marshmallow Root: Provides soothing properties and helps protect the urinary tract lining.
  • Dandelion: Acts as a diuretic, increasing urine output to help flush out bacteria.
  • Horsetail: Has diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help increase urine flow and reduce inflammation in the urinary tract. It also contains silica, which supports tissue repair and health.

It should be noted though that herbal treatments are most appropriate for the prevention and treatment of mild to moderate symptoms of UTIs and from my own experience, they can be really effective. However, for more severe symptoms or recurrent infections, it is important to seek medical advice and consider conventional treatments such as antibiotics.

Another point to make is that eating a healthy diet and cutting out as much sugar as possible is really important. Furthermore, incorporating probiotics, such as yogurt or supplements containing lactobacillus, can further support a healthy balance of gut and urinary tract flora. For post-menopausal women experiencing recurrent cystitis, supporting estrogen levels is essential. Additionally, regular physical activity and staying hydrated can help maintain overall urinary tract health.
